New Drawings from last week!

The 1st four are illustrations to Coldplay's song Swallowed in the Sea.

I was really inspired by John Baldessari for the last one.

This is inspired by New Orleans clubbers and dancers.
Who love to get down. All proud.

And this was inspired by all the beautiful people out there that prefer to be alone... for some mysterious reason...

New iMAGES

Here are some characters I experimented with their shapes for another story I had made up. It's about an insecure parrot named Polly who has a boring office job. Surrounded by people with different self images of themselves... like the cocky jerk-wad always trying to ask out her attractive best friend.

This is my creepy rocking horse to the story I made up. It's kind of like The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe meets Spirited Away. In this case, the Rocking Horse is the an evil wardrobe... or is it?

Here are some figure drawings I did a few months ago, that I'm finally uploading...

Layouts

Here are some layout drawings I did in Spring.

Three kids find an old magical box in the attic.

A man must cross an old dangerous bridge or be eaten by savages.

The gang of no-good-cowboys watch as our young adventurers enter the scene

And here are some storyboards I did for the bridge scene... just for fun.. just to help me visualize the story.
They're all sketchy and fun.

My new little story - Lighting the Way

"Old Fangs" meets "Little Red Riding Hood" meets "From A to Z-Z-Z-Z"

(With a dash of "Nocturna")

It's a little story about a cute little guy

A young lad, with a strong imagination.

A curiosity that burns brightly and strongly.

A little guy...

... named Gus.

He's given a mission form his loving mother...

But he's afraid of the woods he must go through....

We find out, there is indeed something in the woods...

Dum-Dum-Duuuuuuh!

I still have the rest of the story to illustrate... Part 2 coming soon!

(And From A to ZZZ is from a Chuck Jones Cartoon)

The Most New Amazing Best Thing Ever!!! Old Fangs

So I just found out about a great new animated short called Old Fangs by Adrien Merigeau and Alan Holly. They got funding help from Cartoon Saloon. (The same people who made Secret of Kells!)
They were listed on Motionographer because they did so well at the Sundance Festival.
The shots are beautiful and innovative.
The story simple yet so emotionally powerful.
The animation is gorgeous and invigorating.
I love the style and subtleties.
It totally strengthened my love for animation.

But this animation, also made me wonder why must America be so commercial? This short was possible because other countries consider Art important, and fund animations because they view them as valid medium of expression. No less important than as painting or photography. Yet in America, it is only viewed as something for children.
I view animation as an infinite medium, dealing with sound, timing, movement, light, color, storytelling, style, voice, etc. If adult spend such countless time slaving over a story to tell. Why is it then only for children. Children animated TV have had a strong affect on me. If it wasn't for Tom and Jerry, Rocko's Modern World, CatDog, SpongeBob, etc I wouldn't have moved to here to S. Cal.
I feel like like there's something about cell and stop animation that computers can't emulate, but with the help of computer programs, and an innovative eye, they can reach a whole new level they've never reached before. Just like in this video.

Storyboards!!

I'm taking a Storyboarding Class! Yaaay!'

So these are the last 32 frames of the 122 frames I did for my 1st assignment. I chose to do the 1st scene from the Toy Story 3 Script - 1st Draft.
Of course the final draft-(the one in the movie) is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better! and more exciting....

..."Start Late & Leave Early"
(Start with a Bang! & Leave em wanting more!)

But the 1st draft Script is more emotional, and I had a lotta fun doing it! I changed it up a bit and added stuff. (It was painfully enjoyable...)

Enjoy

Hmmm... maira kalman

So I've recently fallen in love with Maira Kalman's book The Principles of Uncertainty. It makes me feel like I'm not the only one in the world in love with old people. ( & by love I mean love, Respect, and admire them).

Also, when walking the streets, I constantly see soo many different interesting looking people that I wish I could just get a peak at a snippet of their life,

their personality,
their daily monotonous routine,
their thoughts...

But enough about my weird interest... Maira Kalman to me is the very definition of an artist. She experiments with different types of styles and mediums. She expresses herself, and tells stories. She does children's books. She's the one that did "What Pete ate from A-Z"! Plus many more!
You can check out her website here: http://www.mairakalman.com/
She's so amazing! She definitely hasn't forgotten how to have fun while creating... You go Girl!
